SEED - Behind the Scenes Talk (Sample)
Sample from my talk at IAMAG Masterclasses about the making of my short film SEED is finally online! And as both me and Patrice from IAMAG felt that the topic is more relevant than ever - considering the state of our industry -, we decided to keep this Masterclass FREE for everyone. (See link below, you only need a simple email signup.)
As some of you know the film is about getting through an art block, but much fewer of you are aware that I started to make the film, because I was going through the most serious art block of my life myself. In my Masterclass I talk about how I approached getting through this period, what helped me to get out of this dark place and also show some artistic and technical insights about what and why I did during the creation of the short film. 🙂

SEED is a CG short film created in Blender. The film is a story of a lonely android stranded on a barren planet searching for a precious artifact. After crash landing on a freshly discovered planet, he decides to go further towards his original goal, what was a mysterious ancient object hidden in one of the volcanoes of the planet. The short film is a touching metaphor of getting through an art...

I would appreciate it if you could lighten the scenes up by say 10%
Thanks and yeah, totally agree - they really look a bit dark on some screens (especially mobile).
First off, I can really tell you love doing environments. They're top tier. stunning textures and effects it's all so wonderful. The animation of the character itself could use some work but the amount of effort and fine tuning it takes to look even that good is more than enough. It's only small things like the steps or very slightly off movements, and occasional unnatural camera movement, like everything else looks like a destiny 2 trailer LMAO. (the intro and the diamond shaped structure felt particularly of the destiny vibe) You done good. love the message. Your light is the seed man find out how to let it shine <3
Thank you for all the kind words man! The thing that you compare my humble efforts to the cinematics of Destiny literally made my day - you are too kind. Agree with all the constructive notes you said about animation and camera moves. Learned a lot from this project, hope the next one is going to be better. :)
I would be betterment with you
Stunning
Thanks very much!
Much better than many of the current Dust videos
Thank you! Means a lot!
Thanks for the reminder. I keep going.
Thank you! Great to hear! :)
Klasse Arbeit 👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
Danke schön!
This deserves more attention
why
@@Jesse-xz7brbecause it's absolutely beautiful
Thank you! You are too kind!
As a student filmmaker, this is so inspiring!!!! Thank you for making this!
Thank you! Means a lot! :)
Sensational!!!
Thank you! :)
My interpretation: when the gumment asks you for your soul, you do it. When someone thrives another dies. Basically how it is working in today's world.
Interesting interpretation, haven't thought about that. Thanks for sharing! :)
@@MarkMolnar Don't pay me no mind. I'm just an old cynical artsy person. :) nice film!! What did you use for the walking and animation? I've seen amazing things done by people using Blender. Just curious.
@@TruthSurge Thanks! The whole film is done in Blender. I used free online mocap data for blocking in all animation and I worked with a really nice animator guy to do the final cleanup.
@@MarkMolnar cool. I dabbled with Blender. Just too much to learn and I just stopped after like 4 months. APPLY ALL TRANSFORMS. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!! That's my basic time with Blender. Like.... it's not smart enough to know I ALWAYS WANT TO APPLY EVERY FREAKIN TRANSFORM SO I DON'T GET BURNED LATER and spend 2 hours trying to figure out why it's not working as expected. So... I haven't touched it in a long time and I guess I won't again. Was kind of cool but too much to worry about trying to get something cool and realizing you have to jerry rig a scene so it won't bog down in viewport or take years to render. Yep, I tweaked everything for fastest renders and have 4070 TI Nvidia, 64 G RAM yada. Nice film and good luck with future stuff! I'll stick to audio. :)
One day they wil figure out that the creator gave up part of his essence to make this reality, we are part of him
Gods cannot create more than or less than, but only of themselves. Some apparently have more than others.
@@1chuck23 Every attribute of gods is man-made. Reality is awsome.
Wow, I love the smoke/Dust effects. Is it rendered in Evee? And always nice to find other great artists making films in Blender! Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Dust and smoke were a bit a mix, some of them are simple videos on alpha cards, some of the are volumes / vdb-s. Rendered in Cycles. Gonna have a Behind the Scenes video up soon, if you are interested in the tech details. ;)
great stuff Mark, congratulations! loved the message too.
Thanks man! Means a lot! :)
One day they will find proof that earth was seeded by a terraforming engineer. I hope they like what they see on their return but I doubt it.
I am pretty sure :)
@kikaha56 So, was this terraforming engineer created by evolution or by still another terraforming engineer?
🤣🤣🤣
Thanks, Mark, for the encouragement
Thank you for your support!
This was very well done. Angles, shots, and p.o.v.. man i really liked it.
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it :)
so, like the schwarneggar Mars movie.
Hahaha :D Never thought about it this way, but Total Recall was dope yeah!
Wow that was really cool! The Film is in of it self a seed. I now want to watch a 2 Hr version of this story. One thing that caught my eye though. Is it possible that you used the wrong normal map for the ground texture at the beginning? It seems inverted.
Thank you! I am glad you did like it! The ground is intentionally "inverted" in the beginning, as it a salt desert... so basically they are not cracks, but piled up salt what you see in a similar crack-like pattern. :)
@@MarkMolnar Ahh. Okay that makes more sense. :)
Okay, well... _<cough>_ there's that, then.
Congrats on this Mark. Some really phenomenal shots in here and a theme many of us can no doubt relate to.
Thanks man! Means a lot coming from you! :)
always great to watch it even if i prefer on large screen (like IAMAG Paris) . Love it .
Thank you! :)
So interesting and inspiring speech at iamag. Thanks This is a great short movie. Not only for technical skills, but for what personal part you put on it. ❤
Thanks man! I am glad you enjoyed the talk as well!
coool
Thank you!
picked up a couple tricks from watching, thank you!!

Mark a question, your color wheel where did you get it?
Fun to see how you're taking a bit of what's there as a launching pad for the next comp. Thanks for sharing!
